Overview

Book
Our journey in Burma, the Golden Land, begins in the former British colonial city of Yangon (Rangoon). No visit to Burma is complete without a trip to the magnificent Schwedagon Pagoda, the cultural heart of the nation, and a walk around the historical colonial district of the city. Our Burmese odyssey continues with the short flight to Bagan and it's plain of 4000 temples, beautifully crafted by the Burmese Kings and dating back to the 11th century. From here we journey into the Chin Hills for our 7 day trek, home to the ethnic Chin people who are of Tibeto-Burman ancestry. Few westerners have visited this area, only opened to tourists in recent years, where many of the women have tattooed faces and wear tribal clothing. The trek is a delightful walk through forested hills, tea plantations and lush valleys and offers an insight into the lives of the Chin with their mix of Buddhist, Christian and traditional Animist beliefs.

The people we meet will be as curious about us as we are about them, and the variety of accommodation - from monastery to school house - allows us the unique opportunity to get close to village life. At the end of the trek we head for Mandalay where we visit the U Bein teak bridge at sunset and the ruined pagodas of Mingun. This holiday combines time in 3 of Burma's culturally rich cities with an off-the-beaten-track experience in a beautiful and unspoiled area, culminating in the ascent of Mt Victoria (3063m), named for the British Empress herself. An adventure travel connoisseur's holiday choice!

Our leader was also an excellent cook and provided an excellent variety of tastes and dishes for each meal. We loved the food and all felt that he had got it just right; we appreciated his thought and efforts on this important element of the trip! We loved the trip and thought the variety was just right: of visits to iconic sights combined with trekking to quiet villages. The adventure to Mount Victoria and staying overnight enabled us to see a magnificent sunset and sunrise with no "tourists"! We all loved staying in the variety of accommodation in the villages - this was a very special experience and please do continue with this kind of itinerary.

I would like to commend the staff for proposing an alternative itinerary given the unstable political situation at the time. I had many follow up questions which were addressed and made me feel comfortable that the trip would be a success. The hotel stays in the bigger cities were quite luxurious and comfortable. Sleeping in village schoolhouses, monasteries and local homes while on trek really added to the overall experience of living among the Chin people. The food was plentiful and excellent: fresh fruit and vegetables; freshly killed chickens and goat. The support crew could not have been more helpful and happy. I heard laughter from them the entire trip. One of my favorite characters on the trip was our driver in Bagan. He was humorous during our long drives and offered his commentary on local sights. Our local guide did an outstanding job of sharing his passion and knowledge of the Burma history and customs. He never tired of showing us the temples and monasteries. He was attentive to all of our needs. On trek, he looked out for us and made sure we had enough to eat and drink (rum sours before dinner every night was a nice treat) and that our accommodations were satisfactory. I had a great time. I felt like an explorer as we hiked the Chin hills. We passed through villages that had probably only met a handful of Westerners. They were the happiest people that I have ever met on trek. Although they did not speak English, they always had a smile, a wave and most

This was an excellent trip combining walking, sights and culture. The itinerary gets the balance rights and was just what we were hoping for. Our guide was superb. His energy, enthusiasm and knowledge were undimmed throughout the trip. The country is coming out of a long period of military rule and is not tarnished by the kind of tourism that has affected more "developed" parts of SE Asia. The people are friendly, open and interested in visitors. However, it was he who brought this to life; we would not have had such a rich experience without him.

A great holiday in a country which has only recently opened up to tourism. The right mix of roughing it on trek, to staying in good hotels whilst sightseeing. I most enjoyed the variety, from trekking in the jungle to sightseeing in Bagan; boat trip on the Irrawady to walks on the U Bein teak bridge. A great holiday and one I'd recommend. The situation in Burma is changing all the time. Holidays in this country need to be under constant review.
